Willowbank Stone Festival 2013
In 2013, we took the festival to historic Queenston, Ontario, site of the famous War of 1812 battle of Queenston Heights. As part of a greater stone festival organised by the Willowbank School for Restoration Arts, the weekend featured a lime burn, dry stonewalling, blacksmithing, stone carving, live bands and a vintage clothing auction.
The carving auction raised over $8000.00, with proceeds going to Willowbank, Heartland Forest, The Ottawa Inner City Ministries and relief in the Philippines through UNICEF.
Rideau Canal Festival 2012
In 2012, we brought the festival to Ottawa and joined forces with the Rideau Canal Festival. Our tents were set up next to Lock #1 of the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by the beautiful Parliament Buildings and the Chateau Laurier, the setting was ideal. We once again drew 25 carvers who created pieces while crowds of tourists gathered around. The response was amazing!
We held our Saturday evening party at the Lieutenant’s Pump on Elgin Street, where everyone had a great meal and received prizes for participating. The auction raised over $6000.00, with proceeds supporting the Ottawa Inner City Ministries and the Beth Donovan Hospice.
Milk and Mallets 2011
In 2011, we coupled with the Winchester Dairy Festival once again and continued our support of the development of Sweet’s Corner Park. The number of participants increased to 25, with a number of them coming from the Algonquin College Heritage Masonry Program in Perth, Ontario. The event included camping, fireside singing, and a very tasty feast of barbequed ribs.
Milk and Mallets 2010
In 2010, the first Canadian Stone Carving Festival was launched in conjunction with Dairy Fest in Winchester, Ontario. Working closely with the Winchester Downtown Revitalization Committee, our aim was to help raise funds for the development of Sweet’s Corner Park. The festival drew 20 participants including heritage stonemasons and local sculptors.
